The Sakatti deposit is located in Sodankylä, Central Lapland, one of the rare ore fields in Europe. Geologically, the deposit is exceptional due to its high metal concentrations and versatile metal combination.
Sakatti’s principal metals are nickel, copper, the elements of copper and platinum group metals, i.e., platinum and palladium, and cobalt, gold, and silver. Metals play a central role in emissions-free energy production, storage, and traffic development.
Sakatti’s operations are guided by the FutureSmart MiningTM programme, taking us towards more sustainable mining operations by combining technology, digitalisation, and responsibility.
Part of the Sakatti deposit is located beneath a protected bogland that belongs to the Natura 2000 network.
The aim is to implement an underground mine at Sakatti that respects nature, a carbon neutral mine. The natural values of the area impose strict boundary conditions on the project.
The Sakatti project utilises new technological solutions. The straight tunnel to be bored by the tunnel boring machine starts from the concentration plant site outside of the protected area, and heads towards the ore at a depth of approximately 500 metres. There will be no above-ground structures in the protected area.
The starting point for planning has been undertakings for preventing, minimising, and ultimately compensating for impacts on nature. We minimise the impacts of our operations on the environment throughout the lifetime of activities, from ore exploration through to mine closure.
The Sakatti Project is estimated bring about investment of almost a billion euros and hundreds of permanent jobs for Finland and Sodankylä. The goal is to start construction of the mine in the late 2020s.
Anglo American’s subsidiary registered in Sodankylä, AA Sakatti Oy, is the company responsible for the mining project.
